A Garden for the People by the People - Ma matou ma tatou he mara kai
Merivale Community Garden was started when two things happened simultaneously. There was a vacant section on the corner of Fraser St and Alverstoke Rd that Housing New Zealand made available to us, and a ground swell of interest in a community garden in the local community so the idea gained momentum and began to materialise. It is a not-for-profit whole community project which has altruistic aims to supply fresh vegetables for anyone in the community who might need them, through the Community Centre or privately, and to teach gardening skills for use at the community garden or at home. The participants, which can be anybody who spends some energy on the project and are happy to be working together to bring the garden to harvest.
